Moonshot AI Sets $2B Revenue Target as K3 Still Pushes 300B Tokens a Day

The Chinese lab behind the Kimi assistant is chasing a $2 billion annual revenue run rate even as usage of its flagship K3 model cools from its earlier peak.
Moonshot AI, the Beijing-based developer of the Kimi chatbot, is aiming for $2 billion in annual revenue, according to reporting from TechCrunch. The target puts the company in a small group of Chinese AI startups claiming nine-figure or larger business ambitions, and it arrives at a moment when its flagship K3 model is drawing less traffic than it did earlier this year.
The scale of K3's remaining footprint is still substantial. Data from OpenRouter, the routing service that tracks requests across model providers, shows K3 models generating as much as 300 billion tokens per day on the platform. That figure reflects inference volume passing through one aggregator rather than Moonshot's total traffic, but it gives a rare public read on how much work a single Chinese model is doing in the wild.
The tension between those two numbers is the story. Token volume on a third-party router has slipped in recent months, even as the company raises its revenue goal — a sign that Moonshot expects to convert existing usage into paying customers rather than rely on raw growth. Enterprise contracts, API access and the Kimi consumer app are the most likely places that money would come from, though the company has not broken out which line contributes what.
Moonshot is not alone in chasing that kind of number. Chinese labs including DeepSeek, Zhipu and Alibaba's Qwen team have spent the past two years competing on both benchmark scores and price, with API rates falling sharply as capacity expanded. For Moonshot, the $2 billion figure matters less as a forecast than as a signal to investors and enterprise buyers that it intends to be a durable business, not a research project with a popular demo.
Analysts will want to see how much of the target is already contracted. A run rate built on annualized current bookings is a very different claim from a goal set for the end of a fiscal year, and Moonshot has not disclosed which it means. The company's next public milestones — new model releases, pricing changes or funding news — should clarify whether K3's token volume is a floor it can monetize or a peak it has already passed.
