Anthropic Sets 18+ Age Floor for Claude as Age-Assurance Checks Roll Out

Anthropic has published its first standalone age-assurance policy, setting 18 as the minimum age for Claude access and leaving the verification method undisclosed.
Anthropic now says its Claude chatbot is for adults only. The company published a support page titled "Age assurance on Claude" that sets 18 as the minimum age for access, the first time it has spelled out in public how it intends to keep minors off the model. The policy applies to a product that has been open to anyone with an email address since 2023.
The page does not say which verification method Anthropic uses. Age assurance spans a wide range of techniques, from a self-declared birthdate to government-ID uploads, credit-card checks and third-party identity brokers. Each has a cost: document scanning leaves a company holding sensitive identity records, card checks lock out anyone without a credit line, and self-declaration is bypassed by typing a different year. Anthropic has not disclosed how it handles the data it collects or how long it keeps it.
The gap between a stated rule and an enforced one is the central question. Anthropic has not said whether existing accounts will be re-verified, whether users found to be underage will be suspended, or what happens to data already gathered from them. Until those details are published, the 18+ floor functions more as a declaration than a working gate. That distinction matters for a company that has staked much of its public identity on safety commitments.
The timing follows two years of regulatory pressure. Legislators in Washington, Westminster and Brussels have pushed AI and social platforms to keep minors away from certain content and to show evidence they are doing it. A documented age-assurance process gives Anthropic a concrete answer when a regulator asks what stops a 14-year-old from signing up. Rivals including OpenAI and Google have faced the same questions without publishing a comparable standalone policy.
The tradeoff is friction. Every added verification step is a point where a legitimate user abandons signup, and Claude competes for the same consumer audience as chatbots that have not imposed an equivalent floor. Anthropic is wagering that compliance and safety credibility outweigh the accounts it loses. Competitors weighing their own age rules will watch whether that bet shows up in usage numbers.
How Anthropic resolves the enforcement questions will set the template. If it re-verifies existing accounts, millions of users face a new checkpoint; if it does not, the policy's practical reach is limited to new signups. Watch for updates to the support page, any mention of a verification vendor, and whether other frontier labs follow with their own published thresholds.
